Bridge design specialists Knight Architects have announced that their Japanese-inspired hydraulic footbridge in Paddington, London, has been approved to go ahead. The Merchant Square Bridge is inspired by traditional Japanese fans, raising and lowering in a unique segmented fashion which the architects say make it more like a “kinetic sculpture”.The 3-meter (9.9-ft) wide bridge crosses London’s Grand Union Canal with a span of 20 meters (66 ft) and will be illuminated at night by embedded LED lights on the handrail.
